    Bassai Dai

    About

    Bassai Dai is usually the first Sentei kata to be learned and is the most popular choice as tokui kata by 1st kyu examinees for black belt.

    Elements

    • One of the four core Kata’s
    • Repeated changes in blocking
    • Shifting from disadvantage to advantage
    • The greater of the two Bassai katas

    Kanku Dai

    About

    Kanku Dai is one of the most important kata in the Shotokan syllabus. This is, despite being an advanced kata, quite basic, but is a very long kata.

    Elements

    • 65 movements; longest of the Sentei kata
    • famous for being Master Funakoshi’s favourite kata
    • Kanku means “looking to the sky”
    • It is widely believed that this kata humbles oneself

    Sanbon Kumite

    Kumite consisting of the attacker making three attacks forward and the defender blocking three times and then counterattacking.

    Elements

    • First kind of fighting students learn
    • Drills attacks and defenses
    • Attacker uses 3 different, consecutive attacks
    • Defensive counter-measure response skills taught

    Gohon Kumite

    About

    A pre-arranged attack and counter exercise – the Gohon Kumite is designed to teach people how to deal with the pressure of being attacked and highlights the way in which your blocks can be used for defense.

    Elements

    • Incorporates attack and defense responses
    • Teaches how to use kicks, punches, and blocks
    • Teaches you how to work with a partner
    • Defensively, teaches outside block and rising block

    Self Defense Choke Hold

    Shotokan Karate incorporates 3 components – Kihon (basic stances, strikes, kicks, blocks, etc.), Kata (movements), and Kumite (fighting and self-defense response techniques). As a student of Shotokan Karate, you will learn methods to defend yourself against attackers.

    Jiyu Ippon Kumite

    Advanced one-step drills in Kumite (fighting) techniques.

    • develops quick reactions to attacks
    • blocking and counterattack movements

    Zenkutsu Dachi

    Front stance intended to create power, flexibility, and movement for practitioners of Shotokan Karate.

    Elements

    • First stance element & foundation of power
    • Front stance
    • Incorporates basic kicking elements
    • One of the most common stances in kata

    Heian Nidan

    About

    One of the first five Katas that students studying Shotokan Karate are introduced to. The Heian Kata series introduce students to the basics of Karate and are core elements that must be mastered to advance in Karate ranks.

    Ippon Kumite

    About

    Ippon Kumite is the second type of kumite (fighting/sparring) elememnts students must learn after the Gohon Kumite. It incorporates self-defense elements.

    • one of five types of Kumite taught within Shotokan Karate
    • performed empty-handed
    • includes attacking and defending stances
    • involves stepping and blocking movements

    Heian Godan

    About

    One of the first five Katas that students studying Shotokan Karate are introduced to. The Heian Godan Kata is the fifth and highest level in the series.

    Elements

    • builds student’s confidence in their skills
    • completes student’s Heian Kata series training within the Shotokan syllabus
    • incorporates quick and slow movements and jump
    • involves 23 counts/elements

    Age-Uke

    Age-Uke is one of the first karate techinques taught to beginners, it is a Kihon (basic) core element within Shotokan Karate.

    Elements

    • involves a defensive response to an attack
    • movement deflects attack upwards
    • utilizes forearm in block
    • incorporates solid stance for stability

    Kihon Hip Rotation

    About

    Kihon’s are fundamental techniques taught in Shotokan Karate and martial arts at large. A student must master these basic elements in order to advance in their training.
